Aircraft "Grounded" For Restoration
August 10, 2010; In February 2008, the Douglas A-4-A Skyhawk that for many years rested on a pedestal at the North Gate of the former Alameda Naval Air Station (Alameda Point), was damaged when it was blown down during a windstorm. Since then, the Skyhawk has been stored in Hangar 5 at Alameda Point, while a team of historians and airplane enthusiasts scoured the nation for original parts and data regarding the aircraft in hopes of restoring it. With their efforts, the team now has the port aileron, wing tip and a starboard aft main gear door needed to complete the restoration.
Meanwhile, on July 8, 2010, at the opposite side of the Air Station, the Corsair A-7 jet that graced the East Gate was removed from its pedestal to join the Douglas A-4-A Skyhawk in Hangar 5, where it, too, can be restored to its original glory. The team plans to restore the Corsair A-7 to its 1957 colors when it flew in the same squadron as Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon. Hopefully, both planes will be back, soaring on their pedestals by the end of the year.
